What is Bitlocker?

Bitlocker is a Windows program that prevents people without the code from being able to log into your computer. When you are first set up with a laptop, your technician would have had you select a numerical code. It would have been at least 4 digits long.

What to do if you do not remember your Bitlocker code

If you do not remember your Bitlocker Code, or if the Bitlocker Recovery screen comes up, follow the steps below.

  1. If you have forgotten your code, you will need to press the ESC key on your keyboard. This will open the Bitlocker Recovery Screen.
  2. On this screen you will an alpha numeric code. you will only need the first 8 characters of this code.
  3. Go to https://skidbamdb.skidmore.edu/selfservice
  4. You will be prompted to put in your Skidmore username and password.Uploaded Image (Thumbnail)
  5. Type in the first 8 characters of the code displayed on the recovery screen on the laptop and choose a reason for the unlock from the drop-down menu.

  6. Click on “Get Key”. You will then get a 48 digit recovery key that will need to be typed into the Recovery screen on the laptop.
  7. Once this is done, the laptop should boot to Windows.

Additional Steps if you have forgotten your code

Once you are able to log into your computer, you will need to submit a ticket to have one of our technicians help you change your code to something new. A ticket for this can be submitted here.
